Hi friends,
How are you? I’ve been enjoying some ease recently — journaling when I feel like it, going for long walks every morning, editing down my closet into something manageable. It’s been really nice to step away and have some time to readjust creatively, and I appreciate the patience. My plan at the moment is to come back in full force around mid-October, in my post-honeymoon-bliss, when I have a little more time to dedicate. I have a lot to share, including an eggplant recipe I’m trying to find a name for, thoughts on how women can take back some power in dating, and a meandering missive on packing for a long trip.
But while you may need to wait a bit for a new newsletter, I wanted to let you know about an opportunity for us to hang out in person. I have the true honor of giving a talkback after a performance of the new play Blood of the Lamb on October 1. Written by Arlene Hutton and directed by Margot Bordelon, the play follows 70 minutes in the lives of two women in a Dallas airport — a pregnant woman traveling from LAX to JFK who suffers a miscarriage mid-flight and the lawyer assigned to represent her baby as part of a new law. I had the opportunity to see the play opening night and it was a true revelation. It’s the kind of art that hits you in the gut, that you feel almost uncomfortable viewing, but that forces you to confront parts of yourself you’d rather not unearth.
I’m so excited to invite you to see the play and listen to my talkback on Oct 1, where I will be discussing the play and its increasing connection to our current moment in politics. You can find tickets here — make sure you choose Oct 1 as the performance date — and use code MARIA50 for $50 tickets. Even if you can’t make it to the performance where I’ll be speaking, I encourage you to see the play on your own time.
That’s it for now! I’ll see you back in a few weeks.
xx Maria
